Empty columns in Solitaire
An empty tableau column is powerful because it can hold a King or a valid sequence beginning with a King. No other rank may start an empty column in standard Klondike.
The short version
Emptying a column is useful only when the space improves access. If no King is ready, removing the last card can simply move the blockage elsewhere and waste a scarce temporary space.
